Lactation Support
Lactation consultants are relatively new members of the medical birthing teams. They are professional breastfeeding specialists trained to help mothers with a variety of issues. Saint Elizabeth has lactation consultants who work right here in our Family Birth Center.
This consultant helps mothers and babies with an of a number of situations that might arise, such as latching difficulties, painful nursing, low milk production, or inadequate weight gain.
Teacher
She's a teacher as well as a counselor and helps mothers understand the fundamentals of lactation as well as supporting their efforts to learn how to feed their babies.
Back-to-work
The lactation consultant may help women meet their breastfeeding goals in light of special circumstances such as returning to work or school.
Pumps
She's familiar with breastfeeding equipment such as breast pumps and other supplies that are helpful to breastfeeding mothers and infants.
Take a BREASTFEEDING class
Saint Elizabeth recommends you take a breastfeeding class BEFORE you deliver your baby. You’ll learn from certified lactation specialists about basic breastfeeding techniques, building your milk supply, dad’s role in these feedings, milk pumping techniques for anyone who will return to work or in other situations, as well as prevention and management of problems should they arise.
