I have just found out I am pregnant. Now what??
We have an entire month-by-month check list for you. Just call TLC at 219-7000 and request an information packet that includes the checklist. The list includes information on such things as making sure you have an OB/GYN physician (we can help you locate one); check out your health insurance; schedule a tour of the Saint Elizabeth Family Birth Center; and start talking to your baby---use soothing tones, reading or playing music is recommended.
When and how should I choose a physician for my baby?
The best way to select a doctor for your baby is to check with your insurance to see who is on your policy and then talk with other parents you know and trust. You can also ask your delivering physician for a recommendation. You should choose your baby’s doctor approximately 2-3 months before your due date. This way you will have time to make an appointment with the doctor to ask some of these questions:
• How soon after birth will the doctor see your baby?
• When will your baby’s next exams take place, once you have left the hospital?
• When is the doctor available by phone? E-mail?
• What happens if there is an emergency?
• Who covers the practice when your doctor is unavailable?
• How often will the doctor see your baby for checkups and immunizations?
• What are the costs of care?
What should I discuss with my baby’s doctor before my baby arrives?
Good issues to discuss include:
• When should the baby leave the hospital?
• Should the baby be circumcised if it is a boy?
• Should I breast or bottle feed?
• Should I store my newborn’s cord blood?
How do I choose where to have my baby?
You can tour most hospital’s Family Birth Center. At Saint Elizabeth you will see the private rooms, in-room whirlpool behind French doors, the family-friendly surroundings and high tech equipment. You will also want to make sure that in the unlikely event there is a problem with either you or your baby that the most advanced care-givers and equipment are close at hand. Saint Elizabeth has its “delivery” operating suites located between their labor & delivery area and their NICU---newborn intensive care unit. If problems arise, the physicians, OR team, and necessary equipment is all right on hand. You’ll also want to consider birthing options and pain management options. And remember, Saint Elizabeth also offers care for you spiritually as well as medically and emotionally.
